So this book is about proofreading in a very technical sense. That is, this book is about reading printer proofs and correcting them before they are published for general consumption of the public.
The book talks about many different aspects of this job, including the aptitude required for such work and different ways of going about the work. How to train yourself to find errors in a text and how to mark those errors for correction.
Perhaps the most helpful aspects of this book is its chapter on developing style sheets to help keep a manuscript consistent with one style. It also talks about reading slowly and training yourself to do so, reading out loud and comparing live and dead copies.
It also covers what you as a proofreader are responsible for, and not responsible for, and how to tactfully query an author for clarification where necessary. I never knew there was so much to know concerning fonts and typefaces, but I learned what a serif was.
The book also warns against reading a text backwards. I found that bit of advice to be refreshing. It sets the tone for the type of helpful advice the book gives the reader and potential proofreader. I highly recommend this book to writers and would be authors, translators and publishers, and especially graduate students writing dissertations. If the job is worth doing it is worth doing well, and this book teaches you what goes into doing this job well.
Top Contributor: Writing. Trust me. I have several of McGraw-Hill's books and reference materials, mcgraw-hills proofreading handbook pdf download, and they are one of the best in their class!
The Proofreading Handbook is the most informative one I've seen yet. Also, I never see grammatical mistakes in any of their printed materials. I literally had to translate the writer's language, but I find that McGraw-Hill's materials are always easy to read, understand, mcgraw-hills proofreading handbook pdf download, follow, and then apply.
Perhaps I have seen other reference materials state the same lessons, but not in the same way so I can remember a rule and grasp an idea as easily in the more difficult chapters. I bought this to help a few people on my staff with their proofreading skills.
While the book is obviously written to aid professional proofreaders, there were parts of it that were very basic and applicable to their mcgraw-hills proofreading handbook pdf download. Hilariously, the contents are afixed to the cover upside down, with the pages in otherwise correct sequence, running from the last page of the index to the title page.
I haven't read it yet, but the actual content looks super. I'm not going to return it, it's funnier to keep it as an ironic oddity. The book was in good condition and the seller was great, but the book itself was just too old to be of much use. The last copyright mcgraw-hills proofreading handbook pdf download is in the 's, so it is not up-to-date with technology that is used now. Get it if it's required for your class, but it's not worth your time if you want to learn how to edit in the 21st century.
This came with the jacket upside down and backwards. Kind of odd funny for what the book is. My liberal arts education and B. This book shows how to read a text to look for errors and how to mark them so they can be corrected. Excellent book. Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I have not found this book particularly helpful when using the search function for punctuation and proper grammar. I tried to find "why didn't the CEO develop the plan themself" for guidance on including both genders.
The "not found" was not at all helpful. Can anyone suggest another stylebook more helpful when editing for McGraw Hill? See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews.
